The article by Stull and Mayer entitled Learning by Doing Versus by Viewing: Three Experimental Comparisons of Learner-Generated Versus Author-Provided Organizers was a great resource I discovered while researching and implementing my PIP. It validated the idea that a student generated graphic organizer was of greater value educationally than a teacher-authour generated organizer because it reinforced student engagement, made them apart of the lesson and began the process of teaching them processing skills. The article also placed great emphasis of the use of graphic organizers in the classroom because it allowed students to engage in the cognitive processing of decoding informational texts. The article also suggested that when students construct their own organizers they are challenged to think deeply about what to select and how to organzie into a coherent manner. I discovered the value of student created graphic organizers when I was conducting the research for my final project. The students took great pride and enjoyment in this task and have continued to use their classroom creation to decode the very complex social studies text. The article offers confirmaion of the importance and vlaue of using a graphic organizer in the classroom for a wide range of tasks.
